Centre sits in Cherokee County, and our work here runs from Downtown Centre out past the Cherokee County Courthouse, with Cedar Bluff and Albertville close enough that we are usually in the area anyway.
A lot of what we see in Cherokee County comes down to age. Houses built decades ago have solid frames with tired hardware; houses built recently have sound hardware in frames that are still settling.

These are the exterior door repair faults we are called out to most often in Centre. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.
- Fasteners are showing rust streaks down the door faceNon-stainless fixings on an exposed opening, which will keep staining and eventually fail.
- Insects getting in around the doorGaps at the sweep and threshold, and often moisture-damaged wood attracting them.
- Sidelight or transom glass has foggedFailed insulated units in the fixed panels beside the door.
- There is a tide line across the bottom of the doorStanding water at the threshold, which means drainage rather than the door is the real fault.
- Water on the floor inside after rainFailed sweep, threshold or sill pan, or missing drip cap above the door.
- Drafts you can feel from across the roomCompressed seals and a threshold no longer meeting the door bottom.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895What we see on exterior door repair around Cherokee County
Elevation means wind. Doors on exposed western walls take a beating that the same door in a sheltered valley subdivision would never see.
Wind-driven rain hits an entry door horizontally, which defeats seals that would handle vertical rain without difficulty, and the water gets in at the top corners and behind the brickmould.
Grit at the threshold grinds the door sweep as the door closes over it, and a worn sweep is the most common reason an otherwise sound exterior door starts letting in air, water and insects.
None of it is a reason to replace a door. It is a reason to use the right parts and set the door up correctly in the first place.
Local factors we account for in Centre: storm wind and grit and dust — typical of the Sand Mountain and Lookout Mountain plateau.

- Assess it closed, from insideWith the lights off inside, daylight shows exactly where the seal has failed. That is the fastest diagnosis there is.
- Follow the waterStaining, rot and rust all point uphill to an entry point. We find that before repairing anything downstream of it.
- Correct the geometry before the sealsWeatherstrip cannot seal a door that is not sitting square. Hinges, reveal and threshold come first. We check the drainage for ice blockage on mountain openings, which is a fault that only shows up on the coldest days.
- Fit for the exposureStainless fixings, marine-grade or coated hardware and the correct sweep, depending on how much weather the opening takes.
- Make the lock work without forceThe deadbolt should throw fully with the door simply closed. If you are leaning on it, the geometry is still wrong.
- Check it under a hoseWhere water has been getting in, we test the repair rather than assuming it worked.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895What affects the cost of exterior door repair in Centre
What a exterior door repair job costs comes down to a handful of things, and we would rather be straight about them up front:
- weatherstrip and threshold work versus structural repair
- sidelight and transom glass replacement
- whether water management details also need correcting
- security reinforcement and hardware upgrades
- whether the frame has rot that needs splicing
Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Centre.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Exterior door repair in Centre: questions we get asked
Water comes in under my front door when it rains hard. Why?
The sweep and threshold are not sealing, and often the sill pan underneath has failed or was never there. In Cherokee County the rain comes in hard and sideways, so the seal has to work under pressure.
Should I add a storm door to my entry?
It helps with weather and with keeping the door itself out of direct sun and rain, which extends the life of the finish. On a door that already gets full afternoon sun in Centre, it is worth considering.
Can you fix a front door that has warped?
Depends on how far. Mild warping can often be handled with hinge and strike adjustment and better weatherstrip. Severe warping on a solid wood slab usually means replacing the slab, which can be hung in the existing frame.
My sidelight glass has fogged up. Can that be replaced separately?
Yes. Sidelights and transoms use insulated glass units that can be replaced on their own, without touching the door.
The bottom of my wooden front door is rotting. Can it be saved?
Often yes, if it is caught early enough. The bottom rail can be repaired and the door refinished. What matters more is fixing the water that caused it, or the repair rots out the same way.
How long does exterior door repair take?
Weatherstrip, threshold and alignment work is usually a few hours. Rot repair and frame work takes longer, and we will tell you which one you are looking at before we start.
