Most of our Chickasaw calls come from Downtown Chickasaw and the Craft Highway corridor, though we work the whole Mobile County side of it and get out to Prichard regularly.
A lot of what we see in Mobile County comes down to age. Houses built decades ago have solid frames with tired hardware; houses built recently have sound hardware in frames that are still settling.

These are the exterior door repair faults we are called out to most often in Chickasaw. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.
- Fasteners are showing rust streaks down the door faceNon-stainless fixings on an exposed opening, which will keep staining and eventually fail.
- The door bottom drags on the thresholdHinge sag or a threshold adjusted too high.
- Daylight visible around the closed doorFailed weatherstrip, a dropped door, or a frame out of square.
- The door is tight in the morning and loose by eveningA door absorbing moisture overnight and drying through the day, which points to an unsealed edge.
- Insects getting in around the doorGaps at the sweep and threshold, and often moisture-damaged wood attracting them.
- The sweep leaves a visible arc of wear on the thresholdThe door has dropped, so the sweep is loaded rather than lightly contacting.
One call gets you an answer. We will tell you what is wrong and what it takes to fix.
Click to Call (205) 619-2895Why exterior door repair fails in the Alabama Gulf Coast
Between roughly 65 inches of rain a year, near-constant humidity and a June-to-November hurricane season, coastal doors work harder than doors anywhere else in Alabama.
Water reaching a threshold with no sill pan under it goes into the framing and the subfloor, and by the time it shows as a soft jamb the damage underneath is usually well advanced.
Wind-driven rain hits an entry door horizontally, which defeats seals that would handle vertical rain without difficulty, and the water gets in at the top corners and behind the brickmould.
It is why the same repair done properly in Chickasaw lasts, and the same repair done cheaply does not.
Local factors we account for in Chickasaw: heavy rainfall and storm wind — typical of the Alabama Gulf Coast.

- Check it in the closed position firstStanding inside with the lights off and looking for daylight tells us more in ten seconds than any amount of measuring.
- Find where the water goesMost exterior door failures are water failures. We look at the threshold, the sill pan, the drip cap and the ground level outside.
- Correct the geometry before the sealsWeatherstrip cannot fix an inconsistent gap. The door has to be sitting right before sealing it means anything.
- Fit for the exposureStainless fixings, marine-grade or coated hardware and the correct sweep, depending on how much weather the opening takes.
- Make the lock work without forceThe deadbolt should throw fully with the door simply closed. If you are leaning on it, the geometry is still wrong.
- Check the finish and the edgesTop and bottom edges get sealed, because unsealed end grain is the fastest way back to a warped door. We check the drainage path on every coastal opening, because wind-driven rain gets in where ordinary rain never would.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895What affects the cost of exterior door repair in Chickasaw
What a exterior door repair job costs comes down to a handful of things, and we would rather be straight about them up front:
- sidelight and transom glass replacement
- whether the frame has rot that needs splicing
- security reinforcement and hardware upgrades
- weatherstrip and threshold work versus structural repair
- whether water management details also need correcting
Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Chickasaw.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Exterior door repair in Chickasaw: questions we get asked
Water comes in under my front door when it rains hard. Why?
The sweep and threshold are not sealing, and often the sill pan underneath has failed or was never there. In Mobile County the rain comes in hard and sideways, so the seal has to work under pressure.
Should I add a storm door to my entry?
It helps with weather and with keeping the door itself out of direct sun and rain, which extends the life of the finish. On a door that already gets full afternoon sun in Chickasaw, it is worth considering.
Why does my front door stick in summer and not in winter?
Seasonal movement in the door and the frame. In Chickasaw's humid months a wood door takes on moisture and grows slightly, and a door that already had tight clearance starts binding.
My steel door is rusting at the bottom. Do I need a new door?
Not necessarily. Steel door bottoms can be rebuilt, and the real issue is why water is sitting there. If the frame and skin above are sound, the repair is worth doing.
Is my front door secure enough?
The weak point on most entry doors is not the lock, it is the strike. A deadbolt in a strike plate held by short screws into thin jamb material offers much less than people assume. Reinforcing it is inexpensive.
How much does a leaky front door actually cost me?
More than people expect. A gap you can see daylight through around a Chickasaw entry door moves conditioned air continuously, and in the summer it is running against your air conditioning all day.
