Clay is part of our regular Jefferson County territory, and between the Old Springville Road corridor, Cosby Lake Road and the Cosby Lake area we are here most weeks.
A lot of what we see in Jefferson County comes down to age. Houses built decades ago have solid frames with tired hardware; houses built recently have sound hardware in frames that are still settling.

These are the window repair faults we are called out to most often in Clay. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.
- Water pools on the sill track and does not clearBlocked weep slots. Water that cannot leave the track finds its way inside.
- The sash will not stay upFailed balances or a broken sash cord on an older window.
- The screen is torn or missingRescreening or a replacement screen panel.
- A slider window that is hard to moveWorn rollers and a dirty track.
- Rotted wood at the sash or sillWater damage in a wood window, often repairable with splicing.
- A slider window has worn a groove in its trackFailed rollers running on bare track, and the track will need attention as well as the rollers.

The metro runs humid from April to October, then flips to freezing nights in January, and hardware that was fine in August starts binding in winter.
High humidity saturates the desiccant in a sealed glass unit quickly once its seal has begun to fail, and it also keeps wood sashes at a moisture content where rot can get started.
Storm wind drives water horizontally against a window and pressurizes the frame cavity, which forces water past seals and through weep systems that work perfectly well in ordinary rain.
It is why the same repair done properly in Clay lasts, and the same repair done cheaply does not.
Local factors we account for in Clay: sustained humidity and storm wind — typical of the Birmingham metro.

- Establish the type before the faultDouble hung, casement, slider, awning and fixed all fail differently, and the diagnosis follows the type.
- Test the moving parts independentlySash movement, locking and sealing each get checked separately so we know which one has failed.
- Check the drainageWeep holes and sill drainage get checked on any window with water intrusion, because that is usually the cause. We flush the running surfaces properly on metro jobs rather than just wiping them, since fine clay packs into places a cloth will not reach.
- Repair rather than replace where it makes senseBalances, operators, locks and glass units are all serviceable parts. A whole window is rarely the honest answer.
- Reseal properlyCorrect sealant on a clean, sound surface, and glazing set with the right blocking so the unit is supported rather than pinched.
- Check it holds where you leave itA sash that creeps down after a few minutes has not been fixed, so we leave it open and come back to it before finishing.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895What affects the cost of window repair in Clay
Pricing on window repair depends on what has actually failed, which is why we talk it through before quoting. These are the things that move the number:
- commercial glazing and access requirements
- wood repair and rot splicing where the frame is damaged
- single window versus several in one visit
- the type of window and whether replacement hardware is still available
- glass unit size, tempering and low-E coatings
Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Clay.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Window repair in Clay: questions we get asked
How do I stop condensation on my windows in winter?
Some of it is indoor humidity rather than the window. But if the glass surface is cold enough to condense heavily, the unit may have failed. In Clay it is worth checking whether the moisture is on the surface or between the panes.
Water is coming in at my window sill. What causes that?
Usually blocked weep holes. Windows are designed to collect water in the frame and drain it out, and when those drains clog it backs up and comes inside instead.
How long does window repair take?
Balance, hardware and screen work is usually under an hour per window. Glass unit replacement takes a measuring visit and then a fitting visit once the unit is made.
Can foggy windows be repaired?
The sealed glass unit gets replaced, but the frame, sash and hardware stay. That is the repair, and it costs a fraction of window replacement.
My casement crank spins without moving the window. Why?
The gears in the operator have stripped. It is a common failure and a straightforward replacement as long as we can identify the manufacturer.
Why will my window not lock anymore?
The sash has dropped or shifted, so the lock and keeper no longer meet. Forcing it can break the lock, and the actual fix is usually alignment rather than new hardware.
