Will fixing the hinges fix my latching problem?
Frequently. A door that has dropped on its hinges puts the latch below the strike. Bringing the door back to position often means the lock works again with no other work.
Why do my hinge screws keep coming loose?
Because they are only holding into jamb material, which is often less than an inch of soft wood. Long screws driven into the structural framing behind the jamb solve it permanently.
Can hinges be repaired or do they have to be replaced?
Pins, tips and lubrication problems are repairable. Once the knuckles have worn oval and the hinge has play in it, it is done and needs replacing, and putting a new pin in a worn hinge does not help.
What makes hinges squeal?
Dry or worn pins, and sometimes grit in the knuckles. In Elmore the doors that squeal first are usually exterior doors, because moisture strips the lubricant and starts surface corrosion inside the knuckle.
My door is sagging. Do I need a new door?
