Exterior and Front Door Repair in Hamilton, AL

An exterior door has to do three jobs at once: keep weather out, keep people out, and open easily every day. When it starts failing at one of them it is usually already failing at the others.

Exterior Door Repair — Hamilton, Alabama

Hamilton sits in Marion County, and our work here runs from Downtown Hamilton out past the Marion County Courthouse, with Winfield and Guin close enough that we are usually in the area anyway.

Between the established parts of Hamilton and the newer subdivisions, we see two different kinds of failure: worn-out frames on one side of town and worn-out hardware on the other.

What Hamilton customers call us about

These are the exterior door repair faults we are called out to most often in Hamilton. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.

  • Fasteners are showing rust streaks down the door faceNon-stainless fixings on an exposed opening, which will keep staining and eventually fail.
  • Drafts you can feel from across the roomCompressed seals and a threshold no longer meeting the door bottom.
  • Sidelight or transom glass has foggedFailed insulated units in the fixed panels beside the door.
  • The sweep leaves a visible arc of wear on the thresholdThe door has dropped, so the sweep is loaded rather than lightly contacting.
  • The door is tight in the morning and loose by eveningA door absorbing moisture overnight and drying through the day, which points to an unsealed edge.
  • Rust streaks or bubbling paint on a steel doorMoisture getting into the door skin, usually at the bottom edge.

Why exterior door repair fails in west Alabama

Humidity stays high from late spring through September, which is exactly when wood doors that fit fine in winter start dragging on the jamb.

Wind-driven rain hits an entry door horizontally, which defeats seals that would handle vertical rain without difficulty, and the water gets in at the top corners and behind the brickmould.

Water reaching a threshold with no sill pan under it goes into the framing and the subfloor, and by the time it shows as a soft jamb the damage underneath is usually well advanced.

We see the pattern often enough across Marion County that we usually know what we are looking at before we arrive.

Local factors we account for in Hamilton: storm wind and heavy rainfall — typical of west Alabama.

How a Hamilton exterior door repair visit works

  1. Check it in the closed position firstStanding inside with the lights off and looking for daylight tells us more in ten seconds than any amount of measuring.
  2. Find where the water goesMost exterior door failures are water failures. We look at the threshold, the sill pan, the drip cap and the ground level outside.
  3. Correct the geometry before the sealsWeatherstrip cannot seal a door that is not sitting square. Hinges, reveal and threshold come first.
  4. Fit for the exposureStainless fixings, marine-grade or coated hardware and the correct sweep, depending on how much weather the opening takes. Across west Alabama we check the frame anchorage carefully, because seasonal soil movement works fixings loose over time.
  5. Make the lock work without forceThe deadbolt should throw completely with one finger and the door untouched.
  6. Check the finish and the edgesTop and bottom edges get sealed, because unsealed end grain is the fastest way back to a warped door.

What affects the cost of exterior door repair in Hamilton

Pricing on exterior door repair depends on what has actually failed, which is why we talk it through before quoting. These are the things that move the number:

  • the material of the door: wood, fiberglass or steel
  • whether water management details also need correcting
  • security reinforcement and hardware upgrades
  • whether the frame has rot that needs splicing
  • weatherstrip and threshold work versus structural repair

Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Hamilton.

Exterior door repair in Hamilton: questions we get asked

My sidelight glass has fogged up. Can that be replaced separately?

Yes. Sidelights and transoms use insulated glass units that can be replaced on their own, without touching the door.

Is my front door secure enough?

The weak point on most entry doors is not the lock, it is the strike. A deadbolt in a strike plate held by short screws into thin jamb material offers much less than people assume. Reinforcing it is inexpensive.

The bottom of my wooden front door is rotting. Can it be saved?

Often yes, if it is caught early enough. The bottom rail can be repaired and the door refinished. What matters more is fixing the water that caused it, or the repair rots out the same way.

How long does exterior door repair take?

Weatherstrip, threshold and alignment work is usually a few hours. Rot repair and frame work takes longer, and we will tell you which one you are looking at before we start.

I can see daylight around my front door. Is that just weatherstrip?

Sometimes, but check whether the gap is even. A consistent gap all the way around is a weatherstrip job. A gap that is wide at one corner and tight at another means the door or frame has moved, and new weatherstrip will not close it.

Should I add a storm door to my entry?

It helps with weather and with keeping the door itself out of direct sun and rain, which extends the life of the finish. On a door that already gets full afternoon sun in Hamilton, it is worth considering.
