We take Helena work across the whole town, Old Town Helena through Riverwoods, and we cross into Alabaster and Pelham on the same trips.
Helena has enough older housing stock that repair almost always beats replacement here, and enough new construction that we spend a lot of time on hardware that failed early.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Why screen door repair fails in the Birmingham metro
Birmingham-area red clay expands when it is wet and contracts hard when it dries out. That movement travels straight up into slabs and foundations, and door frames are usually the first place a homeowner notices it.
Humidity corrodes the steel components in screen rollers and rusts the tiny springs in adjusters, so screens seize up and drop out of their track.
Grit accumulating in the screen track is the reason most screens get hard to move, and it wears the small plastic rollers far faster than the weight of the panel ever would.
We see the pattern often enough across Shelby County that we usually know what we are looking at before we arrive.
Local factors we account for in Helena: sustained humidity and grit and dust — typical of the Birmingham metro.

- Check whether it is the screen or the trackA screen that keeps coming out is usually a roller and track problem, and rescreening it would not solve anything.
- Check the frame for squareA racked frame will never slide properly. Corner keys get reset before anything else is considered.
- Choose mesh for the jobStandard, pet-resistant, solar or fine insect mesh. The right one depends on the door, the exposure and what tore the last one.
- Rescreen with correct tensionEven tension and properly seated spline so the mesh does not sag or pull out of the channel.
- Fit and adjust the rollersBoth rollers set so the frame runs level and the latch meets its keeper without lifting. We flush the running surfaces properly on metro jobs rather than just wiping them, since fine clay packs into places a cloth will not reach.
- Test the full travelThe door should move with one finger, latch cleanly and stay in the track.

There is no single price for screen door repair in Helena, because two doors with identical symptoms can need very different work. Here is what makes the difference:
- rescreening versus repairing or replacing the frame
- storm door hardware such as closers and latches

- roller and track work in addition to the screen itself

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Screen door repair in Helena: questions we get asked
My sliding screen keeps falling out. Why does it keep happening?
The rollers have worn down so the panel is riding too low and the top rail no longer sits in the head channel. Lifting it back in without replacing the rollers means it will come out again, usually within days.
The screen slides hard even though it is not falling out. What is wrong?
Either the rollers have seized or the track is packed with debris. In Helena the track collects a surprising amount of grit, and it acts like grinding paste on the rollers.
Will a solar screen make my room cooler?
It helps noticeably on a sunny exposure. Solar mesh blocks a good portion of the heat before it reaches the glass, which matters on west-facing doors during Helena summers.
Is it worth rescreening or should I just buy a new screen door?
Rescreening is far cheaper and the frame is usually fine. New panels only make sense when the frame is bent beyond straightening or the corners are gone.
What mesh should I use if I have dogs?
Pet-resistant mesh, which is a heavier vinyl-coated polyester, and often a pet grille across the lower section. Standard fiberglass will not survive a dog that pushes against it.
My screen mesh has gone brittle and crumbles. What happened?
UV exposure. Screens on the south and west sides of a house in Helena take a lot of sun, and standard fiberglass mesh eventually degrades. Solar mesh lasts longer and cuts heat at the same time.
