We know Minor well: the older housing around the Minor Parkway corridor, the newer construction toward Red Mountain, and everything out past Five Mile Creek.
The mix of housing here matters for door work. Older Minor homes have wood frames and hardware worth repairing rather than replacing, while newer construction tends to have vinyl and aluminum systems where the moving parts wear out long before anything else does.

These are the door hinge repair faults we are called out to most often in Minor. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.
- Rust streaks below the hingesCorroding hinges, common on exterior doors that get weather.
- The door drags on the floor or on the latch sideThe top hinge has pulled loose and the door has tilted.
- Hinge screws spin and will not tightenStripped screw holes in the jamb, or screws that only ever reached the jamb and not the framing.
- Visible gap between the hinge leaf and the jambThe hinge is pulling away under load.
- The door swings open or shut on its ownThe hinges are out of plumb, so gravity is doing the work.
- Rust has locked the pin in placeUntreated steel hinges on an exposed opening, which will keep seizing until they are replaced.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Why door hinge repair fails in the Birmingham metro
The metro runs humid from April to October, then flips to freezing nights in January, and hardware that was fine in August starts binding in winter.
Damp jamb material loses its grip on screw threads, and a hinge screw that was tight in a dry jamb starts to spin once the wood around it has been at high moisture content for a couple of seasons.
A gust catching an open door and slamming it against its stop puts an enormous shock load through the top hinge, and that single event is often what starts a sag that develops over the following months.
None of it is a reason to replace a door. It is a reason to use the right parts and set the door up correctly in the first place.
Local factors we account for in Minor: sustained humidity and storm wind — typical of the Birmingham metro.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Our door hinge repair process
- Find which hinge actually failedWe check the reveal at the top and bottom of the door, which tells us where the movement started.
- Check what the screws are holding ontoShort screws into casing rather than framing are the most common cause of sag we see, and no hinge fixes that.
- Repair the mortise before fitting hardwareA new hinge in a damaged mortise will loosen again quickly. Metro-area openings often sit on clay that moves seasonally, so we check the frame for square before touching the hardware.
- Size the hinge to the doorA solid or fire-rated door needs hinges rated for its weight. Three light hinges on a heavy slab will always sag again.
- Re-hang and check the revealAn even gap top to bottom, latch side and hinge side, before we go anywhere near the lock.
- Silence it properlyOnce the geometry is right, the pins and knuckles are lubricated so the squeak does not simply come back.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Door hinge repair in Minor: questions we get asked
How do I know which hinge is the problem?
Look at the gap between the door and the frame down the latch side. If it is tight at the top and wide at the bottom, the top hinge has pulled. That is the one carrying the most load and it fails first.
Can hinges be repaired or do they have to be replaced?
Pins, tips and lubrication problems are repairable. Once the knuckles have worn oval and the hinge has play in it, it is done and needs replacing, and putting a new pin in a worn hinge does not help.
Are the hinges on my sliding door serviceable?
Sliding doors do not use hinges, but French and swinging patio doors do, and they are heavy. Those hinges take a lot of load and are worth checking if the door has started dragging.
What makes hinges squeal?
Dry or worn pins, and sometimes grit in the knuckles. In Minor the doors that squeal first are usually exterior doors, because moisture strips the lubricant and starts surface corrosion inside the knuckle.
My door swings open by itself. Can that be fixed?
Yes. That means the hinge line is out of plumb, so the door is rolling downhill. Re-hanging it plumb fixes it, and in Minor it often turns up in houses where the frame has moved.
Should I upgrade to security hinges on my exterior doors?
If the hinges are on the outside, yes. Non-removable pins or set screws stop the hinge side being an easy way in, and it is inexpensive compared with everything else you might do to secure an entry.
