Between Moody proper, the the Moody Parkway corridor area and the newer building out toward Kelly Creek, we stay busy in St. Clair County, and Pell City is close enough that we are often nearby.
Between the established parts of Moody and the newer subdivisions, we see two different kinds of failure: worn-out frames on one side of town and worn-out hardware on the other.

These are the door lock repair faults we are called out to most often in Moody. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.
- The lock works loose again a few weeks after tighteningAn oversized or out-of-round bore letting the chassis rotate under normal use.
- The key turns hard or sticksWorn cylinder pins, debris in the keyway, or a key that has been copied from a copy too many times.
- The lock freezes up in cold weatherMoisture inside the cylinder, common on exterior doors going through a hard freeze.
- The bolt leaves a bright scrape mark on the strikeDirect evidence of misalignment. The mark shows exactly which way the door has moved.
- Two locks on the same door need different keysMismatched cylinders from a previous partial replacement, easily re-keyed to one key.
- A key broke off in the cylinderFatigued key metal, often after months of a lock that was already stiff.

The foothills get real cold snaps and real heat, and the ground moves with them. Rocky, uneven fill under older slabs means door frames rarely stay perfectly square for a decade.
Moisture that has worked into a cylinder over a damp fall will freeze the lock solid on the first hard morning, and the damage usually happens when someone forces the key rather than from the ice itself.
Water running down a door face finds its way into the lock body on any door without an adequate drip cap, and the internal springs in a latch mechanism rust and lose tension long before anything visible happens on the outside.
None of it is a reason to replace a door. It is a reason to use the right parts and set the door up correctly in the first place.
Local factors we account for in Moody: winter freezes and heavy rainfall — typical of the Appalachian foothills.

- Ask when it changedA lock that failed overnight and a lock that got worse over a year are different problems, and the answer narrows it immediately.
- Isolate the failureCylinder, latch, linkage or strike. We test each one with the door open so nothing masks anything else.
- Fix the cause, not the symptomIf the frame has moved, we correct the strike or the hinge side rather than shimming a lock into a bad opening.
- Fit hardware that suits the doorWeight, thickness, backset and exposure all matter, and exterior hardware in this part of Alabama needs the right finish to survive.
- Set and adjustThe bolt should throw completely with the door closed and no pressure applied by hand. In the foothills we check exposure on each elevation, since a door on the weather side ages at a completely different rate to one that is sheltered.
- Leave the keying tidyWhere a door has picked up mismatched cylinders over the years, we re-key so one key does the job.
Most doors we see are repairable.Call and find out before you price a replacement.
Click to Call (205) 619-2895What affects the cost of door lock repair in Moody
What a door lock repair job costs comes down to a handful of things, and we would rather be straight about them up front:
- whether it is a standard bored lock or a mortise case
- whether the lock can be rebuilt or needs full replacement
- the number of doors being keyed alike
- whether the frame or strike also needs correction
- commercial hardware requirements like fire ratings and lever functions
Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Moody.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Door lock repair in Moody: questions we get asked
How do I stop my exterior lock from freezing?
Keep moisture out of the cylinder. In St. Clair County the freezes that cause it come with damp air, and a dry lubricant plus a functioning door sweep and drip cap does more good than anything you can put in the keyway after the fact.
A key broke off in my lock. Can it be saved?
Usually. We extract the broken piece and check the cylinder, but the reason keys break is that the lock was already stiff, so we look at what caused that rather than just handing back a new key.
Are the locks on my sliding door worth upgrading?
The factory latch on most patio doors is minimal. Adding a foot bolt or an auxiliary track lock is inexpensive and makes a real difference, and it also takes some strain off a latch that may already be marginal.
Can you rekey my locks instead of replacing them?
Yes, as long as the cylinders are in serviceable condition. Rekeying keeps the hardware you already have, makes every old key useless, and costs far less than new locksets on every door.
Should I use a single or double cylinder deadbolt?
A double cylinder needs a key on both sides, which stops someone reaching through broken glass but also slows down anyone trying to get out in an emergency. For most Moody homes with glass near the door, we would rather reinforce the glass and the frame and keep a single cylinder inside.
The lock is fine but the door will not stay shut. What is happening?
The latch is not fully engaging the strike, so the door rests closed but is not actually latched. That is an alignment fix and it is worth doing quickly, because a door in that state offers almost no security.
