Sylvania conditions and screen door repair

Up on the plateau the thermometer reads several degrees colder than the valley, and it stays below freezing longer. Ice storms are a real planning item here, not a novelty.

Cold makes screen spline brittle and it shrinks in the channel, which is why mesh often comes loose along one edge after a hard winter even though nothing touched it.

Grit accumulating in the screen track is the reason most screens get hard to move, and it wears the small plastic rollers far faster than the weight of the panel ever would.

Knowing that is the difference between a repair that holds through a Sylvania summer and one that does not.

Local factors we account for in Sylvania: winter freezes and grit and dust — typical of the Sand Mountain and Lookout Mountain plateau.

How we approach screen door repair

  1. Check it against the openingWe run the frame through its travel and watch where it tightens, which shows whether the fault is the frame or what it runs in.
  2. Assess the frame for squareA racked frame will not sit in the track properly no matter what mesh is in it.
  3. Match the mesh to the exposureOn a sun-facing opening, standard fibreglass will be brittle within a couple of seasons, so we specify accordingly.
  4. Rescreen with correct tensionEven tension and properly seated spline so the mesh does not sag or pull out of the channel.
  5. Fit and adjust the rollersSet so the panel rides smoothly and stays captured in the head channel. Plateau jobs get seals and lubricants rated for freezing temperatures, since standard products stiffen and stop working when it matters.
  6. Check it stays in the trackA screen that can be lifted out is one gust from being on the patio, so the height and the guides get set properly.

What affects the cost of screen door repair in Sylvania

Every screen door repair call in DeKalb County is a little different, and the cost follows what the door actually needs:

  • roller and track work in addition to the screen itself
  • the size of the panel
  • custom-built replacement panels where the original is not repairable
  • storm door hardware such as closers and latches
  • the mesh type chosen, from standard fiberglass to pet-resistant and solar

Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Sylvania.

Screen door repair in Sylvania: questions we get asked

Do you repair storm doors as well as screens?

Yes, including closers, latches, sweeps, hinges and glass or screen inserts. Storm door closers that have torn out of the frame after a gust are one of the most common calls.

My screen mesh has gone brittle and crumbles. What happened?

UV exposure. Screens on the south and west sides of a house in Sylvania take a lot of sun, and standard fiberglass mesh eventually degrades. Solar mesh lasts longer and cuts heat at the same time.

Do you make custom-size screens?

Yes. Older openings in Sylvania are rarely a stock size, and building a panel to the actual measured opening is the only way to get one that fits and stays in.

My sliding screen keeps falling out. Why does it keep happening?

The rollers have worn down so the panel is riding too low and the top rail no longer sits in the head channel. Lifting it back in without replacing the rollers means it will come out again, usually within days.

Can a bent screen frame be straightened?

Sometimes. Light aluminum frames can often be brought back to square, but a badly racked frame is usually better replaced, and a custom panel is not expensive.

My storm door blew open and broke. Can it be repaired?

Usually yes: the closer and its mounting take the damage. We repair the mounting and fit a wind chain so the next gust does not do the same thing.
