Between Tallassee proper, the Downtown Tallassee area and the newer building out toward the Gilmer Avenue corridor, we stay busy in Elmore County, and Millbrook is close enough that we are often nearby.
Tallassee has enough older housing stock that repair almost always beats replacement here, and enough new construction that we spend a lot of time on hardware that failed early.

Remnants of Gulf systems still carry serious rain this far inland, and doors on the south and west sides of a house take the brunt of it.
Direct sun degrades the finish on exterior handle sets and cooks the grease out of the mechanism, and on a south or west facing entry the handle usually looks tired years before the door does.
Water running down a door face gets behind the exterior rose and sits against the latch mechanism, which rusts the spring cassette and is why exterior handles fail far more often than interior ones.
Knowing that is the difference between a repair that holds through a Tallassee summer and one that does not.
Local factors we account for in Tallassee: sun and heat load and heavy rainfall — typical of the River Region.

- Work out whether it is the handle or the latchThey feel similar from the outside. Turning the handle with the door open tells us immediately which part has failed.
- Check the door and strike alignmentA latch dragging on the strike puts load through the handle mechanism and is a common reason handles fail early.
- Repair where it is worth repairingGood hardware often just needs a spring cassette or a spindle, and that is a better outcome than replacing a solid brass set with a builder-grade one.
- Fit square to the doorBackset, thickness and bore all get checked. A set fitted to an oversized bore will work loose again within weeks.
- Set the latch engagementThe latch should enter the strike cleanly with the door pushed to. No lifting, no shoulder, no jiggle.
- Match the run where we canOn a commercial run of levers, consistency matters. We fit to match the existing rather than leaving one odd door. In the River Region we check for both humidity swelling and clay movement, because the two are easy to confuse and need different work.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Door handle repair in Tallassee: questions we get asked
Why does my exterior handle keep corroding?
Exposure. In Elmore County an exterior handle needs a finish rated for it, and cheap plated hardware on a door that gets weather will pit within a couple of years no matter how well it is installed.
Do I need to replace the lock to replace the handle?
Not necessarily. On a keyed entry set they are integrated, but on many doors the handle and the deadbolt are separate and you can change one without touching the other.
Why does my door rattle after a new handle was fitted?
The new latch is probably sitting at a slightly different depth than the old one, so the strike no longer holds the door tight. Adjusting the strike fixes it in a few minutes.
How long does a handle replacement take?
Most take under an hour per door in Tallassee. If the bore is worn or the backset does not match, it takes longer because the door itself needs work before the new hardware will sit right.
My lever handle droops. Can that be repaired?
Yes, usually. The return spring inside the handle body has failed. On decent hardware we can replace the spring cassette; on thin builder-grade sets it is often cheaper to fit a better handle than to rebuild a weak one.
Can you match new handles to my existing hardware?
In most cases. Finish families are reasonably consistent between brands, and for Tallassee homes where the hinges and locks are staying, matching the handle finish is usually straightforward.
