What we see on screen door repair around Baldwin County

Between roughly 65 inches of rain a year, near-constant humidity and a June-to-November hurricane season, coastal doors work harder than doors anywhere else in Alabama.

Humidity corrodes the steel components in screen rollers and rusts the tiny springs in adjusters, so screens seize up and drop out of their track.

Salt corrodes aluminum screen frames and destroys standard fiberglass mesh, and screens on coastal properties need marine-grade or vinyl-coated mesh if they are going to last more than a couple of seasons.

We see the pattern often enough across Baldwin County that we usually know what we are looking at before we arrive.

Local factors we account for in Gulf Shores: sustained humidity and salt air — typical of the Alabama Gulf Coast.

How we approach screen door repair

  1. Check it against the openingWe run the frame through its travel and watch where it tightens, which shows whether the fault is the frame or what it runs in.
  2. Check the frame for squareA racked frame will never slide properly. Corner keys get reset before anything else is considered.
  3. Match the mesh to the exposureOn a sun-facing opening, standard fibreglass will be brittle within a couple of seasons, so we specify accordingly. On the coast we also check every fastener on the opening, because salt finds plated screws long before it touches the door itself.
  4. Rescreen with correct tensionEven tension and properly seated spline so the mesh does not sag or pull out of the channel.
  5. Fit and adjust the rollersSet so the panel rides smoothly and stays captured in the head channel.
  6. Test the full travelEnd to end, several times, with the latch engaging cleanly at the close.

What affects the cost of screen door repair in Gulf Shores

There is no single price for screen door repair in Gulf Shores, because two doors with identical symptoms can need very different work. Here is what makes the difference:

  • rescreening versus repairing or replacing the frame
  • roller and track work in addition to the screen itself
  • custom-built replacement panels where the original is not repairable
  • storm door hardware such as closers and latches
  • the mesh type chosen, from standard fiberglass to pet-resistant and solar

Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Gulf Shores.

Screen door repair in Gulf Shores: questions we get asked

My storm door blew open and broke. Can it be repaired?

Usually yes: the closer and its mounting take the damage. We repair the mounting and fit a wind chain so the next gust does not do the same thing.

Can a bent screen frame be straightened?

Sometimes. Light aluminum frames can often be brought back to square, but a badly racked frame is usually better replaced, and a custom panel is not expensive.

The screen slides hard even though it is not falling out. What is wrong?

Either the rollers have seized or the track is packed with debris. In Gulf Shores the track collects a surprising amount of grit, and it acts like grinding paste on the rollers.

What mesh should I use if I have dogs?

Pet-resistant mesh, which is a heavier vinyl-coated polyester, and often a pet grille across the lower section. Standard fiberglass will not survive a dog that pushes against it.

How long does a rescreen take?

Usually under an hour per panel in Gulf Shores. If the frame needs straightening or corner keys replaced, allow a bit longer.

My screen mesh has gone brittle and crumbles. What happened?

UV exposure. Screens on the south and west sides of a house in Gulf Shores take a lot of sun, and standard fiberglass mesh eventually degrades. Solar mesh lasts longer and cuts heat at the same time.
