Sliding Door Repair in Muscle Shoals, AL

The three things that go wrong on a sliding glass door are rollers, track and alignment, and they are connected. A worn roller lets the panel drop, the dropped panel grinds the track, and the chewed-up track destroys the next set...

Sliding Door Repair — Muscle Shoals, Alabama

Our territory takes in Muscle Shoals and the communities around it in Colbert County, so calls from Avalon Avenue, Woodward Avenue and out by FAME Recording Studios all get the same response.

Door problems in Muscle Shoals tend to sort into two groups: older homes where the frames and jambs have taken decades of weather, and newer builds where the hardware was the cheapest part of the package and has already given up.

When to call about sliding door repair

These are the sliding door repair faults we are called out to most often in Muscle Shoals. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.

  • It jumps off the trackThe panel has dropped low enough that it is no longer captured by the head channel, or the roller adjustment screws have backed out.
  • The track has a raised lip you can catch a fingernail onAluminium track peened over by a panel that has been running on bare wheel housings.
  • Cold air pouring in around the edgesCollapsed weatherstrip and worn pile seals, and often a gap the panel misalignment created.
  • A loud grinding or scraping noiseMetal-on-metal contact where the roller housing has broken through and is riding on the bare track.
  • Daylight at the top or bottom cornerThe panel is out of plumb, usually from uneven roller adjustment or a frame that has moved.
  • The door takes both hands to moveAlmost always flat-spotted or seized rollers, sometimes a track that has worn into a trough.

Why sliding door repair fails in the Shoals

The Shoals sits right on the Tennessee River, and that water keeps humidity high enough to swell wood doors from May through September. Winter then swings the other direction with repeated freezes that shrink the same material.

Long humid stretches keep condensation on the cold aluminum frame of a slider almost continuously, and that moisture rusts roller axles and adjustment screws from the inside, which is why the screws often shear when someone finally tries to adjust the door.

Sliding door sills are designed to collect water and drain it back outside through weep holes, and after a heavy rain those weeps are exactly where debris ends up, so the track fills, the water backs over the interior lip, and the roller assemblies sit in standing water.

Knowing that is the difference between a repair that holds through a Muscle Shoals summer and one that does not.

Local factors we account for in Muscle Shoals: sustained humidity and heavy rainfall — typical of the Shoals.

How we approach sliding door repair

  1. Look at the whole opening, not just the doorWe check the panel, the track, the head channel and the frame for square before touching a screwdriver, because a door that is fighting the frame will eat a new set of rollers in a year.
  2. Pull and inspect the panelThe panel comes out so we can see the roller housings, the bottom rail and the condition of the track underneath. In the Shoals we check for damp-driven movement in timber frames, which is behind a lot of what gets blamed on hardware.
  3. Match the hardwareSliding door rollers are not universal. We identify the manufacturer and panel weight and fit the right tandem assembly rather than the closest thing on the truck.
  4. Bring the running surface backA pitted or peened track will destroy new rollers in a season, so it gets dressed, capped or replaced before anything goes back in.
  5. Set it so the lock works without liftingThe height is right when the latch engages with the door simply pushed closed. Anything you have to lift is still misadjusted.
  6. Check the weep holes before we goA door that slides beautifully but drains badly will still put water on your floor, so the drainage gets cleared and tested.

What affects the cost of sliding door repair in Muscle Shoals

Pricing on sliding door repair depends on what has actually failed, which is why we talk it through before quoting. These are the things that move the number:

  • how much damage the worn track has taken before the call
  • the size and weight of the panel, since heavy insulated glass units need heavier assemblies
  • whether the frame has moved and needs shimming or refastening
  • how many panels the system has, since three and four panel doors take longer to set
  • the age of the door and whether replacement hardware is still made for it

Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Muscle Shoals.

Sliding door repair in Muscle Shoals: questions we get asked

My door came off the track. Did I break something?

Usually not. A panel comes out of the track when it has dropped low enough that the head channel no longer holds it, which means the rollers were already worn or the adjustment screws backed out. Putting it back without correcting the height means it will happen again.

Is there anything I can do to make my sliding door last longer?

Vacuum the track rather than sweeping it, keep silicone rather than oil-based lubricant on the running surface, and check that the weep holes at the bottom of the sill are open. Oil-based products in Muscle Shoals collect dust and grit and turn into grinding paste.

What does it mean when there is water pooling in the track?

The weep holes that drain the sill are blocked. It is one of the most common causes of water on the floor inside, and it is also one of the easiest things to fix, but if it sits long enough it rusts the roller assemblies out.

Will new rollers fix a door that scrapes loudly?

Only if the track is still in good condition. Once a roller has broken through and the housing has been riding on bare aluminum, the track has a groove worn in it, and new rollers dropped onto that groove will fail quickly. That is when we cap the track.

Do you charge to come look at it?

We talk through the symptoms on the phone first, because a lot of sliding door problems can be narrowed down from a good description and a photo of the bottom rail. Call and we will tell you what we think is going on and what it takes to fix.

Do you repair the older aluminum sliding doors?

Yes, and there are a lot of them in Muscle Shoals. Aluminum frames from the sixties through the eighties are actually good candidates for repair because the frame material has not degraded; it is the rollers, the track surface and the weatherstrip that have worn out.
