Screen Door Repair — Valley, Alabama

Valley is part of our regular Chambers County territory, and between Fairfax, Langdale and the the Chattahoochee Valley mill villages area we are here most weeks.

A lot of what we see in Chambers County comes down to age. Houses built decades ago have solid frames with tired hardware; houses built recently have sound hardware in frames that are still settling.

What Valley customers call us about

These are the screen door repair faults we are called out to most often in Valley. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.

  • The screen track itself is damagedThe channel the screen rides in has been bent or worn.
  • The screen door falls out of the trackWorn screen rollers or a bent top rail that no longer holds the panel in the head channel.
  • It takes real effort to slideSeized rollers or a track full of packed debris.
  • The storm door will not stay closedFailed closer or latch on a hinged storm door.
  • The screen tilts and jams halfway acrossOne roller seized while the other still turns, so the frame is walking out of square.
  • The mesh is torn or has holesStraightforward rescreen, and worth doing before the tear spreads.

How conditions in Valley affect screen door repair

Spring storm lines come through fast here and put a lot of wind pressure on doors before the rain even starts.

Humidity corrodes the steel components in screen rollers and rusts the tiny springs in adjusters, so screens seize up and drop out of their track.

Wind gets behind a screen panel and pushes it out of the track, and on hinged screen and storm doors a gust catching the door is what tears closers out of the frame.

Knowing that is the difference between a repair that holds through a Valley summer and one that does not.

Local factors we account for in Valley: sustained humidity and storm wind — typical of east central Alabama.

Our screen door repair process

  1. Work out whether it is the screen or the trackA screen that jams is often a track problem. Replacing rollers in a damaged track fixes nothing.
  2. Check the frame for squareA racked frame will never slide properly. Corner keys get reset before anything else is considered.
  3. Choose mesh for the jobStandard, pet-resistant, solar or fine insect mesh. The right one depends on the door, the exposure and what tore the last one.
  4. Rescreen with correct tensionEven tension and properly seated spline so the mesh does not sag or pull out of the channel. In east Alabama we check exposure and seasonal movement together, since most openings here see both and the combination is what causes failures.
  5. Fit and adjust the rollersBoth rollers set so the frame runs level and the latch meets its keeper without lifting.
  6. Test the full travelEnd to end, several times, with the latch engaging cleanly at the close.

One call gets you an answer. We will tell you what is wrong and what it takes to fix.

What affects the cost of screen door repair in Valley

Pricing on screen door repair depends on what has actually failed, which is why we talk it through before quoting. These are the things that move the number:

  • roller and track work in addition to the screen itself
  • storm door hardware such as closers and latches
  • rescreening versus repairing or replacing the frame
  • the size of the panel
  • the mesh type chosen, from standard fiberglass to pet-resistant and solar

Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Valley.

Screen door repair in Valley: questions we get asked

Can a bent screen frame be straightened?

Sometimes. Light aluminum frames can often be brought back to square, but a badly racked frame is usually better replaced, and a custom panel is not expensive.

Do you repair storm doors as well as screens?

Yes, including closers, latches, sweeps, hinges and glass or screen inserts. Storm door closers that have torn out of the frame after a gust are one of the most common calls.

My screen mesh has gone brittle and crumbles. What happened?

UV exposure. Screens on the south and west sides of a house in Valley take a lot of sun, and standard fiberglass mesh eventually degrades. Solar mesh lasts longer and cuts heat at the same time.

What mesh should I use if I have dogs?

Pet-resistant mesh, which is a heavier vinyl-coated polyester, and often a pet grille across the lower section. Standard fiberglass will not survive a dog that pushes against it.

How long does a rescreen take?

Usually under an hour per panel in Valley. If the frame needs straightening or corner keys replaced, allow a bit longer.

The screen slides hard even though it is not falling out. What is wrong?

Either the rollers have seized or the track is packed with debris. In Valley the track collects a surprising amount of grit, and it acts like grinding paste on the rollers.
