Most of our Remlap calls come from the AL-75 corridor and the Locust Fork of the Black Warrior, though we work the whole Blount County side of it and get out to Oneonta regularly.
Door problems in Remlap tend to sort into two groups: older homes where the frames and jambs have taken decades of weather, and newer builds where the hardware was the cheapest part of the package and has already given up.

These are the door hinge repair faults we are called out to most often in Remlap. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.
- Commercial door binding against the frameWorn hinges or failed bearings on a heavy door with a closer.
- Paint cracking around hinge leavesMovement. The hinge is shifting every time the door swings.
- The top hinge shows a visible V-shaped gapThe classic sag signature. The top hinge is carrying load the other hinges have stopped sharing.
- Visible gap between the hinge leaf and the jambThe hinge is pulling away under load.
- Rust has locked the pin in placeUntreated steel hinges on an exposed opening, which will keep seizing until they are replaced.
- Two hinges look fine and one is chewed upLoad concentrated on a single hinge because the others are shimmed or set at different depths.

Up on the plateau the thermometer reads several degrees colder than the valley, and it stays below freezing longer. Ice storms are a real planning item here, not a novelty.
Cold thickens whatever lubricant is left in a hinge and makes the pin drag, and a dragging hinge on a heavy exterior door works its screws loose faster than a free-swinging one.
A gust catching an open door and slamming it against its stop puts an enormous shock load through the top hinge, and that single event is often what starts a sag that develops over the following months.
None of it is a reason to replace a door. It is a reason to use the right parts and set the door up correctly in the first place.
Local factors we account for in Remlap: winter freezes and storm wind — typical of the Sand Mountain and Lookout Mountain plateau.

- Find which hinge actually failedWe check the reveal at the top and bottom of the door, which tells us where the movement started.
- Check what the screws are anchored intoMost repeat hinge failures are fastener failures, and that means finding the framing behind the jamb. We check the drainage for ice blockage on mountain openings, which is a fault that only shows up on the coldest days.
- Repair the mortise before the hardwareChewed or split mortises get dowelled and re-cut. Fitting a new hinge to damaged timber just moves the failure a few weeks out.
- Size the hinge to the doorA solid or fire-rated door needs hinges rated for its weight. Three light hinges on a heavy slab will always sag again.
- Re-hang and check the revealAn even gap top to bottom, latch side and hinge side, before we go anywhere near the lock.
- Confirm the lock still lines upCorrecting a sag moves the latch, so the strike is checked and adjusted as part of the same visit.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895What affects the cost of door hinge repair in Remlap
We would rather tell you what drives the price than quote a number that turns out to be wrong once we see the door. On a door hinge repair job in Remlap, the main variables are these:
- whether the door also needs re-hanging or the strike relocated
- the weight and size of the door
- how many hinges need replacement versus repair
- whether the mortises or screw holes need rebuilding first
- finish and security hardware selections
Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Remlap.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Door hinge repair in Remlap: questions we get asked
My door swings open by itself. Can that be fixed?
Yes. That means the hinge line is out of plumb, so the door is rolling downhill. Re-hanging it plumb fixes it, and in Remlap it often turns up in houses where the frame has moved.
How do I know which hinge is the problem?
Look at the gap between the door and the frame down the latch side. If it is tight at the top and wide at the bottom, the top hinge has pulled. That is the one carrying the most load and it fails first.
Why do my hinge screws keep coming loose?
Because they are only holding into jamb material, which is often less than an inch of soft wood. Long screws driven into the structural framing behind the jamb solve it permanently.
Are the hinges on my sliding door serviceable?
Sliding doors do not use hinges, but French and swinging patio doors do, and they are heavy. Those hinges take a lot of load and are worth checking if the door has started dragging.
Can hinges be repaired or do they have to be replaced?
Pins, tips and lubrication problems are repairable. Once the knuckles have worn oval and the hinge has play in it, it is done and needs replacing, and putting a new pin in a worn hinge does not help.
Do you do commercial hinge work?
Yes, including continuous geared hinges for heavy traffic doors in Remlap businesses that keep tearing standard hinges out of the frame.
